Amy Grant, Tori Kelly Give ‘Baby Baby’ a Makeover: The Ram Report
Twenty-five years ago, nearly a decade before she married country superstar Vince Gill, Amy Grant roared onto the pop charts with the infectious single, “Baby Baby,” making the six-time Grammy winner the first solo Contemporary Christian artist to score a Number One pop hit. To celebrate the song’s silver anniversary, Grant has teamed up with 2016 Best New Artist Grammy nominee Tori Kelly to give the song a 21st century rebirth. Produced by David Garcia, the reboot blends Grant’s original vocal with Kelly’s fresh take on the song that propelled Grant’s Heart in Motion LP to quintuple-platinum status.
Penned with musician Keith Thomas, Grant conceived “Baby Baby” with the help of her then-six-week-old daughter, Millie. Fighting a case of writer’s block, she was inspired to write again after uttering the song’s title while gazing at the infant. She finished the lyrics in about 10 minutes and would later go on to perform the song at the Grammy Awards ceremony in 1992, where it would garner three nominations and Heart in Motion would compete for Album of the Year.
“My hope is that those who loved the original will enjoy the breath of fresh air that Tori puts into the song and that perhaps the song will find a brand new audience of younger listeners who weren’t even born when the original was on the radio,” says Grant.
One of those “younger listeners” would, in fact, be Kelly, who was born a year after “Baby Baby” and the fun, flirtatious music video featuring model Jme Stein, were released.
