Americana Fest Doubles Lineup With the Mavericks, Ry Cooder and More
Seventy acts have been added to the six-day Americana Music Festival, the genre’s biggest annual event, set for September 15th — 20th in Nashville. And the list of artists proves just how wide Americana’s doors are open.
Country greats the Mavericks are new to the lineup, as is JD Souther, a legendary rock and pop tunesmith who wrote some of the Eagles biggest hits. Americana icons Buddy Miller, Jim Lauderdale and Ry Cooder will play, along with bluegrass legends Ricky Skaggs and Sharon White, and relative newcomers such as Sam Outlaw, Andrew Leahey and the Homestead, Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear and Daniel Romano. In all, 70 new artists (see below) have boosted the total number of Americana Fest acts to more than 150 — a number that could easily rise between now and September.
“So much about this event is about discovery,” says Americana Music Association president Jed Hilly. “You’ll have these great moments involving the legends, like the time we saw Ry Cooder and John Hiatt reunite for the first time since Little Village broke up. That was cathartic. . . But when you have more than 175 bands in town, you can go into any club any night of the week and see something that’ll knock your socks off, even if you aren’t familiar with the band onstage.”
Patty Griffin, Lee Ann Womack and Los Lobos are the big headliners for the 16th anniversary of the annual event, which is expected to draw crowds of some 20,000 people.
