"Surreal" and "magical" are just two of the words country singer (and Pretty Little Liars actress) Lucy Hale uses to describe her recent performance for iHeartRadio in Los Angeles. With a crowd that included family, show-biz friends and some of her PLL castmates, Hale admits the pressure was on.

Armed (actually, "footed" might be a better description) with her sparkling personality and a favorite pair of bright red cowboy boots, the singer presented a set of tunes from her Road Between album and sprinkled the set with a few choice cover songs as well, sharing the experience (and her personal thoughts) with an exclusive Rolling Stone Country photo gallery from onstage and behind the scenes.

Eyes Wide Shut

"'Nervous Girl' is a song where I discover something new every time I sing it. I relate to every lyric in the song. I've always had a really emotional connection to it. I don't think my eyes are ever open when I'm performing it. I kind of just get lost in it. After I sing it and I open my eyes, I love looking out at the girls in the audience and seeing their reaction."

Chemistry Lesson

"My guitar player, Scotty, he's also my musical director and sings a duet with me. He's the one that really connected the dots with the whole show and the whole band. He and I have an amazing musical connection. Chemistry between the band members is everything, not only musically but personality-wise. This isn't a just a job for them. They're just as invested in this music as I am. I think that definitely shows on stage."

Model Behavior

"The connection [with] a photographer can be really uncomfortable for me. You'd think that I'd be very comfortable with photo shoots and I still am not, because I don't consider myself a model. I sing and I like acting. So every time I go to a photo shoot I feel uncomfortable and a little out of my element."

‘Just Another’ First

"This was the first time I'd ever performed 'Just Another Song' live. When you're singing a song that you wrote, or that you fully relate to, there almost is no wrong in it. I would've thought I would've been a little bit more nervous singing it, but it felt cool to sing my own lyrics."

Hello Dolly

"I've always wanted to do a cover of 'Jolene.' It's one of my favorite songs of all time. I love Dolly Parton. We changed it up to do it a little more bluegrass style and to give it a different effect. Aside from something like the Opry, doing that song was the most musically gratifying I've had thus far. The way that Scotty and Carly and I, our voices, blend together… 'Jolene' is just one of those songs that you can't really deny."

Home Team

"For the last couple of years, acting has been at the forefront. So, it's taken me a while to get comfortable on stage again. This show was particularly one where I felt at home and I definitely felt sure of what I was doing. A lot of the people there had been there at the beginning of this musical journey I've been taking. It definitely felt like Team Lucy."

Cosmetic Calm

"Everyone always asks, 'What do you do to relax before a show?' But what really does relax me is getting ready. That kind of calms my brain a bit. I'm not usually around a lot of people; I'm just usually alone. Obviously, the photographer was in the room [for this photo] but putting on makeup kind of gets me prepared so I can relax."

Kicking Up Dust

"I actually got those boots a couple of years ago to wear at Stagecoach [Music Festival in California]. I wore them for four days straight at Stagecoach and I hadn't worn them since. I always said the next time I wore them was going to be a very, very, very special occasion. So I got them out for iHeartRadio and they still had dust on them from Stagecoach. I just thought they were a perfect reflection for the night."

Seeing Red

"I don't usually go the cowboy boot route. I had a different pair of shoes on but then I thought, 'No, I'm wearing my red boots.' I've definitely worn them in. I like to move around on stage a lot, so they're kind of like the perfect shoes."

Au Naturel

"The photographer (Joseph Llanes) wasn't giving me any sort of direction, he was just shooting me. I think those can be the most special kind of photos because you can capture someone in their natural element."

Pressure’s On

"I'm used to performing for a lot of people I don't know, which is fine. You can perform for thousands of people you don't know but a roomful of a few people you do know is more nerve-racking. The pressure was heightened, but that being said, I definitely felt love in the room. I'd say it was one of the best performances that we've ever done. So I guess nerves aren't always a bad thing."

Liner Notes

"I was doing radio liners, which is very fun because it's just like, 'Hey, I'm Lucy Hale thanks for listening to iHeartRadio' or whatever. I got really used to doing those because I was on a radio tour for three or four months and at every radio station you have to do a lot of these liners."

Country Prayer

"It's pretty crazy because I can remember the first time I heard [Rascal Flatts'] 'Prayin' for Daylight' or 'Any Man of Mine' [by Shania Twain]. Those are still some of my favorite songs and what influenced me and made me fall in love with country music. I love country songs. It's pretty mind-blowing to think of how far I've come."

Paying it Forward

"I've been working towards this since I was 15 years old. I have this amazing support system, which is great. It's the perfect cherry on top. Sometimes I'll get letters or I'll meet girls who will say, 'You're my biggest inspiration, you have completely encouraged me and influenced me.' To know that I can be that kind of person for someone else is kind of hard to wrap my head around.' If I can do that person for someone else, that's pretty cool."
