Australian EDM duo push past conventions on a rollercoaster rush of a debut LP

Dan Monick

Australian DJs and songwriters Nervo shake up EDM conventions with their fiery debut album, laced with head-rattling hooks and frosty, evocative vocals. Collateral is full of rollercoaster builds and drops — lifting with euphoric electro house in "Bulletproof," dipping low with deep bass in "Rainham Road" and leveling out with atmospheric washes in "Did We Forget" and "Let It Go." The duo mix things up with the glam-disco highlight "The Other Boys," which features guest appearances from Kylie Minogue, Nile Rodgers and Scissor Sisters' Jake Shears, and the bubblegum-rap-flavored "Hey Ricky," which spotlights schoolyard verses from Kreayshawn and Dev. Like Nervo's enchanting live shows, Collateral succeeds by being refreshingly different from the norm.
