3. 'Ray'

Some people scoffed when Jamie Foxx was cast as the lead role in this 2004 Ray Charles biopic. At the time, many remembered the actor for his work on In Loving Color and movies like Booty Call, but he proved all the doubters wrong and even won an Academy Award for Best Actor, forever changing his career. The movie wisely focuses on Charles' childhood through the 1960s, and it doesn't shy away the more lurid aspects of his life, especially his drug use and fraught relationships with women. Many rock biopics aspire to create a movie like Ray, but few pull it off.
