Release Date: TBA
Phife Dawg died due to complications from diabetes during the recording of A Tribe Called Quest's final album, We Got It From Here... Thank You 4 Your Service. But he left behind unreleased solo material, some of which started to appear last year. On "Nutshell," which appeared in April of 2016, Phife Dawg rapped over an old instrumental from J Dilla. A second posthumous track, "Wanna Dance," came out in February, featuring a smooth hook from the singer Dwele.
An album's worth of Phife Dawg recordings is slated for release at some point this year, the first solo LP from the Five-Foot Assassin since 2000's solo debut, Ventilation: Da LP. Phife Dawg's former wife, Desha Taylor, gave an update on the LP's progress during a press conference last November. "His solo album will be out probably sometime during the first quarter of 2017," she said at the time. "We're working on it now. He completed his entire solo album before he transitioned, so we're excited about releasing that."
