The Fifth Element director Luc Besson returns to infinite confines of outer space in the stunning new trailer for his sci-fi epic Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
Based on the long-running French comic Valerian and Laureline, the two operatives played by Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne are given 10 hours to figure out who is attempting to destroy the titular City of a Thousand Planets, with the duo encountering dozens of unique species and breathtaking alien landscapes along the way.
The latest trailer, like its predecessor, only offers a brief glimpse at Rihanna in what appears to be a role involving a morphing showgirl. Both trailers also utilize the Beatles' classic "Because" to soundtrack the action.
According to the film's synopsis, "In the 28th century, Valerian and Laureline are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha—an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe."
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, one of Rolling Stone's 50 Most Anticipated Films of 2017, opens on July 21st.
