How can a film look so radiant and be so hollow? Ask screenwriter Ron Bass, who has adapted Richard Matheson’s novel about love after death into a skin-crawling nightmare of New Age cliches. Robin Williams plays a good doc who dies in a car wreck. His distraught wife (Annabella Sciorra) kills herself, which leaves her in hell and him in heaven trying to find her with the help of an afterlife guide (Cuba Gooding Jr.). Director Vincent Ward, who handled myth with style in The Navigator, flounders here despite dazzling visuals. There hasn’t been this much stuporous spiritual overload since Yanni in concert.
