Guns, wisecracks, cancer, strippers and more guns: That’s the recipe for the red band Deadpool trailer, which stars Ryan Reynolds as the Marvel mercenary-turned-anti-hero with mutant healing powers.
The trailer – which premiered Thursday during Reynolds’ appearance on Conan – begins in somber, more traditional superhero territory, as Reynolds’ character — Special Forces operative Wade Wilson — learns of his serious medical diagnosis. “The cancer’s only in my liver, lungs, prostate and brain,” he says, shrugging off the news with sarcasm. “All things I can live without.” But when an experimental procedure leaves him with accelerated healing, he seeks revenge on the man who put his life in danger.
The tone shifts dramatically as Wilson grows comfortable in his red suit, taking down bad guys and displaying the quick humor that earned him the nickname “Merc with a Mouth” in the original comics. Deadpool annihilates enemies with knives and guns (including one gruesome clip where a single bullet shoots through three men’s heads). Elsewhere, he gets some action at a strip club and enjoys some verbal sparring over his warped appearance with a bespectacled T.J. Miller (as Weasel).
Deadpool admits he resembles “a testicle with teeth,” but Weasel delivers the best insult: “You look like Freddy Krueger face-fucked a topographical map of Utah.”
Deadpool – out February 12th, 2016 via 20th Century Fox – was directed by Tim Miller with a script from writing duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland, G.I. Joe: Retaliation). The cast also features Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, Gina Carano and Brianna Hildebrand.
Reynolds appeared with a supporting role as Deadpool in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
