Patti Smith offers Rooney Mara advice on life, music and love in a new clip from Terrence Malick’s upcoming movie Song to Song. The film takes place against the backdrop of the Austin music scene and stars Mara, Michael Fasssbender, Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman alongside numerous musicians.
Mara and Gosling play a pair of indie rockers who fall in love, though their working and romantic relationship is complicated by a music mogul (Fassbender) and a waitress (Portman). In the new clip, a distraught and uncertain Mara seeks out Smith, who offers comfort, reassurance and some rock and roll musings: “I never thought I would live long,” Smith says. “You know, I’d be an artist and die young of tuberculosis or something, like Charlotte Brontë.”
Along with Smith, Song to Song will feature cameos from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Iggy Pop, Florence and the Machine, the Black Lips and Lykke Li. The movie was partially filmed during the 2012 Austin City Limits festival and is rumored to feature other artists who performed that year, including Arcade Fire, John Lydon and Iron and Wine.
Song to Song will debut March 10th at South by Southwest in Austin before opening in New York and Los Angeles March 17th.
