Ed Helms sets the record straight in the new red band trailer for Vacation, in which he stars as a grown-up version of Rusty Griswold who’s dragging his family back to the site of one of his best childhood memories: Walley World. “I’ve never even heard of the original vacation,” Rusty’s teenage son says. “Doesn’t matter,” the father replies. “The new vacation will stand on its own.”
While the clip showcases the new Vacation‘s commitment to the original’s national lampoonery, it’s also packed with plenty of gags straight out of the Judd Apatow playbook: Rusty frankly informing his sons they’ve just seen a glory hole in a diner bathroom stall; Rusty taking his family for a dip in a hot spring that turns out to be filled with raw sewage; and Rusty waving at a pretty girl in a red sports car — who’s promptly hit by a truck.
Vacation also stars Christina Applegate as Rusty’s wife, Debbie, Leslie Mann as the grown-up version of Audrey Griswold, and Chris Hemsworth as Audrey’s ridiculously ripped husband, Stone Crandall. The Vacation clip also teases the return of the Griswold family matriarch and patriarch, Clark and Ellen, with both Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo reprising their roles from the original films.
John Francis Daley (aka Sam Weir from Freaks and Geeks) and Jonathan Goldstein wrote and directed Vacation; they’ve previously collaborated on screenplays for Horrible Bosses and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.
Vacation opens in theaters on July 29th.
