The first official trailer for Christopher Nolan‘s Dunkirk gives a brief peek into the World War II movie. The film focuses on the 1940 evacuation of Allied soldiers by the British Army from the city of Dunkirk, France. It’s the filmmaker’s first full-length feature since 2014’s Interstellar.
Dunkirk stars Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance. It also costars One Direction’s Harry Styles, Jack Lowden and Aneurin Barnard.
The cryptic clip opens with a seemingly innocuous shot of sea foam washing up on the beach, before tension quickly mounts. Troops are seen aligned on the beach, flanking the harbor, and later out on the water. “At the point of crisis,” “At the point of annihilation” and “Survival is victory” flash between scenes. Its cliffhanging ending shows the faces of soldiers as they begin to realize there’s a possible threat overhead.
Produced by Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas, Dunkirk will debut in theaters on July 21st, 2017.
