‘Trance’ Is an Intelligent, Multi-Layered Film

Peter Travers says Danny Boyle’s new thriller has great acting

Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle’s new thriller, Trance, heavily features hypnotism, but you won’t be getting very, very sleepy. James McAvoy plays Simon, an art auctioneer who participates in a theft of a Francisco Goya painting from his own gallery. The operation goes awry, and Simon is knocked out as he’s nabbing the painting and can’t remember its location. He and his gang find a hypnotherapist played by Rosario Dawson to unravel his memories, and twists and turns abound.

The Worst Movies of March

Peter Travers is surprised to find a movie this good in April, calling it “intelligent” and noting its many layers. Dawson turns in her best performance yet, and Boyle packs in an impressive, multi-sensory experience. “Watching Danny Boyle use his visuals, using sound design, and keep looking for that silence when ambient noise disappears,” says Travers. “Look for clues, find out about these characters, see really good acting.”
