‘This Is the End,’ ‘Man of Steel’ Both Bring the Goods

It’s a rare summer weekend with two worthy new releases, says Peter Travers

It’s a double feature this week on At the Movies, with Peter Travers highlighting both the new Superman film Man of Steel and Seth Rogen’s riotous new comedy, This Is the End. Travers kicks things off with the latter, which stars Rogen, James Franco, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride and Jonah Hill all playing obnoxious, über-Hollywood versions of themselves as the apocalypse begins. “If we have a funnier comedy than this little badass baby, it’s gonna be a miracle,” Travers raves, refusing to give away any spoilers.

As for Man of Steel, Travers admits he was a bit apprehensive about the latest Superman reboot (considering Superman Returns came out in 2006), as studios just seem to be pumping out superhero flicks for easy money. But our fearless critic left the theater pleasantly surprised: Man of Steel doesn’t top the Christopher Reeve movies, but as far as retelling the Superman origin story, Henry Cavill makes a good showing as a moodier, more haunted Clark Kent – a characteristic undoubtedly brought out by the film’s producer, Christopher Nolan. Superman eventually faces off against Michael Shannon’s General Zod, and though it’s quite action-packed, Travers says director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) does get a bit too trigger-happy with the explosions and crumbling buildings.

Summer Movie Preview 2013

Still, “you can’t go wrong!” exclaims Travers. “This is one of those rare summer weekends where I’m saying both This Is the End and Man of Steel are good enough movies to spend your bucks on.”
