‘The Internship’ Is Cutesy Product Placement

Peter Travers: Owen Wilson-Vince Vaughn reunion tied up in a bow

Eight years ago, Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn graced the silver screen together in their daring breakout comedy Wedding Crashers. This summer the duo is back in The Internship, but the family-friendly affair is a far cry from the raunchy hysterics of their past. After getting fired from their job selling obsolete wristwatches, Wilson and Vaughn apply for internships at Google in an attempt to take on the younger generation. Not a bad premise, but as Travers points out, “it’s so sweet, it’s so cute . . . It’s got a little life lesson in it – everything’s tied up in a bow.”

Directed by Shawn Levy (who’s behind franchises like Cheaper By the Dozen and Night At the Museum), the film’s two hours drag on, and worst of all is how it makes Google look like the best place to work. “How craven can you be in Hollywood to make everything a commercial?” Travers asks. While The Internship isn’t necessarily worthy of the scum bucket, Travers recommends waiting to see it on DVD – especially with surefire blockbusters like Man of Steel and This Is the End right around the corner.
