The Birth of a Nation, the Nat Turner biopic that dominated the Sundance Film Festival, has unveiled its first trailer ahead of its October theatrical release. The film – directed and written by Nate Parker, who also stars in the lead role – focuses on the story of Turner, the Virginia slave who led a rebellion against slave owners in 1831.
The harrowing first preview for The Birth of a Nation charts Turner’s story from a preaching slave to the leader of a rebellion that fought for freedom as well as the atrocities Turner witnessed along the way.
The Birth of a Nation, which takes and twists its title from D.W. Griffith’s 1915 KKK film of the same name, won the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize at the 2016 Sundance Festival; Fox Searchlight acquired the distribution rights to the biopic for $17.5 million, a record for the film festival.
In what’s already been billed as a breakout, Oscar-worthy role for Parker, The Birth of a Nation also stars Armie Hammer, Jackie Earle Haley, Aja Naomi King, Mark Boone Junior, Penelope Ann Miller, Gabrielle Union and more. The film opens in theaters October 7th.
