The charming new clip for Southside With You shows the President and First Lady’s profound first date story. “It’s not a date,” Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter) tells her teasing parents, while Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) smoothly informs his mother about the meet-up. “She’s tall,” he says, urged to break down her looks.
Obama tells his mom that Michelle, his “advisor at the firm,” is from Chicago – “the side that’s predominantly black” – and confirms, “Yes, her skin is of the darker persuasion.” Meanwhile, Michelle downplays the meet-up. “He’s the summer associate I told y’all about, the one from Harvard Law,” she says. “I mentioned I worked legal aid, and he invited me to a community event … It doesn’t get more romantic than broken plumbing and under-funded schools.”
During an eventful outing – including a stop at Chicago’s Art Institute, a showing of Spike Lee’s 1989 classic, Do the Right Thing and a quaint ice cream parlor – their relationship progresses. The clip also finds the couple dreaming of impacting positive change on the world. “I just want to do more,” Michelle says. “So do I,” Barack responds.
Southside With You is directed by Richard Tanne and executive produced by John Legend. The film hits theaters August 26th.
