Paul Thomas Anderson's controversial film The Master has received a September 14th release date, with a wider release coming September 21st, according to Variety. The Weinstein Company also confirmed the date on Twitter. According to Deadline, the film will screen at the Venice Film Festival, which runs from August 29th to September 6th. The Master's new release date means Weinstein's Killing Them Softly, starring Brad Pitt, has been pushed back to October 19th.

The Master appears to be loosely based on the life of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, though the Weinstein Company has previously played down any connection. Radiohead guitarist Johnny Greenwood provided the score for the film.
