Between the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens preview and the extended Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice teaser, it’s been a huge week for blockbuster trailers. That trend continued Sunday with the arrival of the latest Fantastic Four clip. In this retelling of the Marvel origin story, we see how Reed Richards (played by Whiplash‘s Miles Teller) and his team of scientists acquire their superpowers, as well as the first look at the Fantastic Four’s most infamous nemesis.
In their synopsis of the reboot, 20th Century Fox says Fantastic Four is “a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team [that] centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend.”
That former friend is Victor Domashev, portrayed by British actor Toby Kebbell. In the trailer, we see Domashev is initially a colleague of the Fantastic Four but something goes wrong on their intergalactic journey and Domashev is left behind. Isolated galaxies away, Domashev eventually morphs into the superhero quartet’s main adversary Dr. Doom.
While fans are likely happy to see this new Doom, purists still question the filmmaker’s canon-breaking decision to rename the comic’s Victor von Doom as “Victor Domashev.” Doom’s trademark metal mask also appears to be replaced by something more organic and gelatinous in the reboot.
Fantastic Four, helmed by Chronicle director Josh Trank, will open August 7th. The film will feature a score by Philip Glass – the legendary composer’s first time working on a superhero film – along with Marco Beltrami.
