Last year, Rolling Stone dubbed Miley Cyrus pop’s wildest child, so it’s only fitting that she could counsel Justin Bieber right now. On last night’s Tonight Show With Jay Leno, she addressed the troubled pop star. “You’ve got a lot of money – pay people to make sure you don’t get in trouble. And party at your house; buy a house and add a club to it.” The audience cheered vociferously.

Regarding her own behavior, Cyrus quipped that, wild as she may seem, “everything I do is legal in California.” The singer – who this week gave her songs a country twerk for MTV Unplugged, where she duetted with Madonna – told Leno that she’s seen her fans posting celebrity mug shots and noting that they hadn’t seen one of Cyrus yet. “I get the most flack of anybody,” she said. “I’m not doing anything illegal. I’m doing a lot of shit, but I’m not doing anything illegal.”

Bieber, on the other hand, has begun the year with a series of police-related woes. After his neighbors accused him of egging their house, police searched his California residence and arrested one of his friends for cocaine possession. Days later, the singer was arrested in Miami for driving under the influence and resisting arrest nonviolently (apparently with a lot of curse words). His bail was set at $2,500, which he paid the next day, departing the jail in a dramatic way; he is to be arraigned on Valentine’s Day. Two days ago, Bieber turned himself in to Toronto police for allegedly assaulting a limo chauffeur. Toronto’s beleaguered mayor Rob Ford yesterday came to the teenage pop star’s defense. “He’s a young guy,” Ford said. “At 19 years old . . . Think back to when you were 19.”
