‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Trailer Delivers Insane Rush of Action

Comic-Con gets a first look at the long-awaited reboot starring Tom Hardy

Mad Max: Fury Road has been a long time in coming. Writer and director George Miller began the dystopian action franchise with the original Mel Gibson installment in 1979, followed closely by Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior in 1981 and Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome in 1985. He reportedly hit a wall while trying to concoct the fourth chapter, but finally found his bearings on the story a decade ago and began shooting all the way back in 2012.

A first look at the reboot made a huge splash at Comic-Con this weekend, and Warner Bros. made the trailer widely available on Sunday. Starring Tom Hardy in the title role, along with Charlize Theron, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Nicholas Hoult, Zoë Kravitz and Hugh Keays-Byrne, Fury Road looks like it might be worth the wait.

“I love chase movies; I think they’re the purest form of cinema,” Miller said in the Comic-Con panel, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. “That’s where the film language started. I wanted to make one long, extended chase, and see what we could pick up about the characters along the way.”

Miller also talked about the relationship of the new film to the first three and recasting the role that launched Mel Gibson’s career. “Of course it’s based on the same character that they’ll play, the lone warrior in the wasteland disengaged from the rest of the world,” he said, according to The Verge. “But naturally Tom brings his Tom Hardy-ness to it, and the story is different to some degree. The character is different to some degree.”

Mad Max: Fury Road is set to hit theaters in May 2015.
