James Bond Composer John Barry Dies at 77

Oscar winner scored 11 films in the ‘007’ series

John Barry, the composer best known for writing the iconic music for 11 movies in the James Bond series, has died at the age of 77. Over the course of his career he won five Oscars, a Grammy and a BAFTA award.

In addition to composing the music for the 007 series, Barry wrote the score for several other films including Dances With Wolves, Out of Africa, Born Free and The Lion in Winter, all of which earned him Academy Awards for best original music. Among his other works, he penned themes for several television series and wrote five musicals, including Lolita, My Love, which was based upon Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Lolita.

Barry scored a number of chart hits in the U.K. for his Bond themes. His original recording of “The James Bond Theme” with the John Barry Orchestra peaked at Number 13 on the pop chart in 1962.
