Take a deep breath, nerds: J.J. Abrams has offered a first glimpse at the X-Wing starfighter set to appear in Star Wars: Episode VII. The teaser comes courtesy of a new promo video for the “Force for Change” charity campaign hosted by Omaze, which will benefit UNICEF and its array of “innovative programs” aiding children in need across the globe.
As Variety notes, the clip – shot on the project’s “currently sunny” London set – gives fans an up-close view of the redesigned Rebel Alliance spacecraft, which features chipped blue paint and a generally battle-roughened exterior. The iconic Millennium Falcon will also reportedly be featured in the upcoming sequel, which hits theaters on December 18th, 2015.
Abrams announced the Force for Change project in a May video shot at the film’s Abu Dhabi set (a recreation of Luke Skywalker’s home desert planet, Tatooine), revealing that campaign’s top prize: a walk-on role in the film. After reaching an unexpected level of success ($1 million within 24 hours of launching, with donors from 119 countries), the organizers – Disney, LucasFilm and Bad Robot – have introduced another excellent prize: an advanced, private screening of the film for the winner and 20 guests in their hometown. To enter the contest, fans must donate at least $10 by July 25th.
Some of the planned UNICEF campaign programs include building “portable, solar-powered learning kits being built in China, Uganda, and Burundi to ensure underprivileged children in these countries have access to relevant, high-quality educational materials” and “mobile phone application developed in South Sudan and Uganda, and used in the Philippines, that helps reunite children with their families after an emergency.”
Last week, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert helped raise awareness of the charity with a hilarious promo video featuring the two comedians engaged in a lightsaber battle to detemine who knows more Star Wars trivia.
