‘Iron Man 3’ Feels ‘Tired’

“I am Robert Downey-ed out,” says Peter Travers

Tony Stark is back for the third installment in the Iron Man series, and Robert Downey, Jr. returns to the role of the magnate superhero. This time, Stark faces his nemesis, the Mandarin, a powerful terrorist who carries out a series of bombings. With the help of the Extremis program – which augments users abilities to recover from injuries – the Mandarin (played by Oscar winner Ben Kingsley) pushes Stark to his limit, and the inventor must turn to friends (like the now former War Machine, James “Rhodey” Rhodes, who’s been rechristened as the Iron Patriot) to fight back.

Peter Travers Reviews Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3 looks to start off the summer blockbuster season with style, but does the third entry in the series hold up? Peter Travers thinks not. “It’s tired now,” he says. “I thought I would never say this, but I am Robert Downey-ed out.” Though Travers enjoys Downey, the actor’s propensity for constant quips has started wear thin. “Funny, but the fact is we’ve seen this and we’ve seen him do it,” says Travers. “He’s become like an old Groucho Marx routine with the cigar. He’s not doing anything new.”

Travers says you won’t hate the film, but he can only muster up a passing grade. “You’ll see crashing, you’ll see Iron Man suits clanging,” he says. “And you’re saying, ‘When are they going to end this?'”
