The Hobbit trilogy finished filming in New Zealand last week, The Associated Press reports, an occasion that director Peter Jackson marked by posting photos of the cast and crew (and his cat, Mr. Smudge) on Facebook. The second movie, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, is due this December; the final installment, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, is slated for release in 2014.
“A long day. A great day. Thank you all for being part of it! Now for some sleep!” read the caption of the final photo on Jackson’s page.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is the second film in the trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkein’s novel, which tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, played by Martin Freeman, as he helps a group of dwarves attempt to recover their home and fortune from a dragon named Smaug. The first movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, took in more than $1 billion worldwide upon its release last December.
