History Repeats Itself in Extended ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ Preview

Five-minute preview reveals blockbuster’s opening act, mass annihilation

With Independence Day: Resurgence opening in just over a month, the sequel to the 1996 sci-fi epic has unveiled a five-minute look at the upcoming blockbuster. More sizzle reel than sneak preview, this extended look combines most of the scenes featured in the first two action-packed trailers for the film plus more footage of the aliens’ return and the annihilation they leave in their wake.

There’s plenty of spoilers as the extended trailer charts out the film’s entire first act and premise: Taking place 20 years after the first Independence Day, the world has harvested the technology the aliens left behind in order to create weapons to fend off future attacks… which is exactly what happens as an extraterrestrial distress call sent out by one of the downed UFOs finally gets an unwelcome response.

Director Roland Emmerich and nearly everyone from the original cast will return for the sequel, including Bill Pullman’s former President Whitmore, who says in the trailer, “We convinced an entire generation that this is a battle that we can win. We sacrificed for each other, no matter what the cost. And that’s worth fighting for.” Will Smith, however, will not appear, though actor Jesse Usher will play his son in the film.

Independence Day: Resurgence invades multiplexes June 23rd.

Taking place 20 years after the first Independence Day invasion, the sci-fi epic returns to the big screen. Watch here.
