‘Harry Potter’ Matthew Lewis on the ‘Potter’ directors

Neville Longbottom actor reflects on all eight movies

Matthew Lewis, the actor who plays the bumbling Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter films, stopped by the Rolling Stone office to reminisce about his experience will all of the directors who have worked on the series over the years. Lewis says that Chris Columbus, who helmed the first two Potter movies, was “dealt the shortest straw,” because he had to work with all the actors when they were very young and inexperienced, and that Alfonso Cuarón and Mike Newell pushed the cast toward becoming more professional in their respective installments. Lewis says he can’t pick a favorite, but he seems rather partial to Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2 director David Yates, who he says is “the loveliest human being to ever exist, like a puppy crossed with a rainbow.”
