Guillermo del Toro has teamed up with HBO to develop a potential new series, Monster, a TV adaptation of a Japanese manga by Naoki Urasawa, Deadline Hollywood reports.

Tarantino, Spielberg, Del Toro Deflect 'Star Wars' Director Rumors

Del Toro has signed on to co-write the story with Steven Thompson, whose writing credits include Dr. Who and Sherlock. Thompson will also pen the pilot, which del Toro intends to direct. The Pan's Labyrinth director was rumored to be in the running for Star Wars: Episode VII, too, though the movie went to J.J. Abrams.

Monster tells the story of a young doctor that saves the life of a 12-year old boy, who turns out to be a diabolical sociopath; the doctor then has to scour the globe in search of the boy and attempt to stop a mass genocide.
