Disney Announces Plans for Third ‘Star Wars’ Anthology Film for 2020

Film to form trilogy with upcoming ‘Rogue One’ and scheduled Han Solo solo movie

Disney announced that Lucasfilm will pump out a new anthology film set in George Lucas’ galaxy far, far away by 2020, according to chief executive Bob Iger. Deadline reports that at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference, Iger said the scheduled film would form a trilogy with this December’s Rogue One and the upcoming Han Solo spinoff film starring Alden Ehrenreich, all under the A Star Wars Story banner.

Iger also said he does not expect the box-office receipts from Rogue One to hit the same highs that The Force Awakens reached last winter. Though Iger reassured that “the level of interest in [Rogue One] is as high as it was for Force Awakens.” He added, “we love what we’ve seen.”

Adding the anthology to the Star Wars schedule means that it’ll be some time before any of us have to live in a lightsaber-less world. The Gareth Edwards-directed Rogue One arrives in December and Rian Johnson’s to-be-titled Episode VIII will open in 2017. 2018 is reserved for Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s Han Solo project and 2019 belongs to Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX.

Iger has stated that he’s already begun to speak with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy about plans for 2021 and beyond. (Deadline’s report also mentions that Iger has taken similar meetings with higher-ups at Marvel Studios to prepare for the next decade.)
