Wolverine is one of the most iconic characters in the Marvel universe – but his days are numbered. The X-Man legend, who’s now over a century old in the comic timeline, will be killed off by the franchise this September in a four-issue mini-series titled Death of Wolverine. Writer Charles Soule (She-HulkInhuman), illustrator Steve McNiven (WolverineAmazing Spider-Man) and Marvel executive editor Michael Marts tease the brooding story arc in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Wolverine Through the Years – Pictures

“For a long time, no matter who Wolverine was battling, he’s been the eternal victor,” Marts says. “He almost always comes out on top. Now he finally comes up against an adversary that he cannot win against, he cannot fight. What does that mean for this character who’s been around for 100 years?”

Though the circumstances of the character’s death are unclear, Marts says the arc was approached “from a standpoint of finality, of closure.” The road to Wolverine’s demise will be chronicled this summer in the story arc 3 Months to Die, which finds the character losing his mutant healing factor – the very power that has kept him alive throughout the years, despite the various fatal injuries he’s suffered.

“He’s reflecting on his own life as he’s reflecting on his own death,” says Soule of the grim storyline. “We wanted to have the reader do that at the same time. In each issue, we’re focusing on a different aspect, or a different quintessential Wolverine…I hope that when people finish it, they’ll feel like he died in a way that was true to him.”

Wolverine’s death won’t be easily shaken – the effects will radiate throughout the Marvel universe in future storylines. “You’re gonna be entering into a world without Wolverine,” says Marts. “That affects not only his teammates, but also the Marvel Universe at large. We’ve got a lot of things in the works already.”

The first Death of Wolverine issue will hit stores on September 3rd; the final issue will arrive on September 24th.
