Mark your calendars: The Avengers sequel has an official release date, though it’s a ways off. You can expect the follow-up to this year’s box office smash at a theater near you starting May 1st, 2015.
The superhero flick raked in a whopping $200.3 million during its opening weekend, and has piled up $1.46 billion so far, making it the third highest grossing film of all time.
News of the release date follows the recent announcement that Joss Whedon will write and direct the sequel as part of an exclusive three-year contract with Marvel Studios. The deal will also find Whedon working on other Marvel-related projects, such as a TV series for ABC.
Although it’s too early to begin camping outside your local cinema, here are some other long-lead projects to ponder while you tick off the slow minutes to May Day, 2015: Filmmakers for The Dark Knight Rises announced in 2010 that the film would come out this July. And just last month, director Peter Jackson said he has expanded The Hobbit from two movies to three, with the final installment due in the summer of 2014. Then there were those Star Wars prequels, which trickled out at a rate of one every three years between 1999-2005.
