At the Movies With Peter Travers: ‘The Other Guys’

All summer long, Rolling Stone‘s Peter Travers has been waiting for a worthwhile “stupid but funny” comedy like The Hangover. This weekend, he gets his wish with The Other Guys , a buddy-cop comedy starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as a pair of police officers anchored to their station desks and envious of the glory supercops Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson enjoy. The film reunites Ferrell with the director who squeezes the most laughs out of him, Adam McKay, who previously helmed Anchorman, Talladega Nights and Step Brothers.

And then there’s the Chace Crawford drug drama Twelve , which makes it way into the Scum Bucket. Essentially a Rated R version of Gossip Girl but with copious amounts of drug use and sex, this depressing film stars Crawford as a dealer — playing essentially his same GG character — who sells “Twelve,” a luxury drug. “Twelve thinks its profound, but guess what, it’s just lousy,” Travers says. When rapper 50 Cent delivers the most standout role in a film — and in Twelve, he does — it’s best to avoid it entirely.
