Watching this distant-future update of Pinocchio with a robot boy in a distant future trying to win the love of his family, is a conflicting, conflicted experience. It started off as a long-gestating Stanley Kubrick dream project. But when the director of 2001: A Space Odyssey passed away, the director of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial took over the project and rewrote the script. Watching the film's robot protagonist David (Haley Joel Osment) struggle with his "human" brother Martin, you sense that this material holds genuine personal import for Spielberg, the father of both adopted and biological children.
