14. 'Tucker: The Man and His Dream' (1988)

Director Francis Ford Coppola and producer George Lucas both saw a bit of themselves in Preston Tucker, the visionary postwar inventor who built a revolutionary modern car and took on the big Detroit automakers. Bridges is perfect as this brilliant, aggressively confident man – a whirlwind of ideas and energy who is determined to succeed through the force of his own personality. (Has he ever done more smiling in a picture?) Yes, his performance sometimes feels one-note, but that's in keeping with the movie's conceit of Tucker as a man determined never to show the doubt that goes on beneath the surface. The film is all glistening surfaces – and Jeff Bridges glistens more than anything or anyone else here.
