9. 'Super Dark Times'
Director Kevin Phillips' impressive feature debut spends two-thirds of its running time as a muted, sensitive character sketch, following an inseparable pair of early Nineties suburbanite teens (perfectly played by Owen Campbell and Charlie Than). Their friendship gets shattered by a tragic accident and a clumsy cover-up – at which point the turns into a straight-up thriller, with high schoolers scrambling to avoid getting murdered. The genre twists work because the movie is so smart about the everyday terrors adolescents face, as they approach the end of childhood and suffer the rapid decay of their innocence. NM
