Yakuza 0

Yakuza 0

While the Yakuza series has been steadily gaining traction in the West in recent years, it has yet to approach the mainstream acceptance enjoyed by Western developed open world crime games of the Grand Theft Auto or Saint’s Row ilk. And that’s a shame because, as Yakuza 0 proves, this is a series that does many things as well or better than its competition but is interesting and idiosyncratic in ways Western titles can’t replicate.

Yakuza 0 pours on its uniquely Japanese appeal in ways even the previous games in the series haven’t matched, turning back the clock to the smoky, loud, neon-lit Tokyo of the 80s and giving us a glimpse of its storied protagonists before being fully entangled in the criminal underworld. It retains the franchise’s wonderful obsession with populating the edges of its world with minigames and side stories, but also stays true to a long tradition of telling convoluted, deep, and interesting stories driven around complicated (if exaggerated) characters.
