'Pokemon Go' Holiday Update Goes Live Today

Here's what's new

The holiday update for Pokemon Go is live today, December 21st, developer Niantic announced earlier. The first new content drops go live at 1:00 p.m. PT (4:00 p.m. ET).

The first new thing players will see when booting up the holiday update is a festive-themed Pikachu. Additionally, as one might expect, more ice-type Pokemon will be available in the world – if the game's weather system doesn't keep players from finding them.

Niantic also revealed ice-type and water-type Pokemon found in the "Hoenn region in the Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire video games will also begin appearing in Pokemon Go for the very first time." Also, between tomorrow, December 22nd, and Christmas, the first PokeStop a player visits will award a single-use Egg Incubator with their first Photo Disc Spin.

Lastly, between today and Christmas, Niantic said "special boxes will feature items such as Super Incubators, Lure Modules, and the all-new Star Pieces, which earn bonus Stardust for 30 minutes when activated. ...  keep an eye on the in-game shop for special boxes, featuring items such as Premium Raid Passes, Super Incubators, and Star Pieces."

The Pokemon Go holiday event is live now and will run until January 4th, 2018.
