Epic's Newest Shooter/Builder Hybrid Thingamajig hits Early Access

Want to feel old? It’s been almost six years since Epic's former leader, Cliff Bleszinski, took to the stage at the 2011 Spike Video Game Awards and gave us a trailer of something called Fortnite. Now it's, sort of, here!

Fortnite is a co-op shooter that allows you and some friends to build encampments, explore exotic locales and, of course, kill gobs of foul-looking monsters. The gameplay reminds us of what would happen if Left 4 Dead and Minecraft became best friends.

You can get it right now but, beware, it's in early access, emphases on the early. Epic has a list of caveats for players, indicating that the UI is brand new and that they haven’t finished building tutorials, among other things. Also, early adopters get the "benefit" of paying full price, with the dev saying it’ll be free-to-play once all the kinks are ironed out. Hey, wait, isn’t that the opposite of how capitalism works?
