Shelob is a Woman in 'Shadow of War' Because … Look Just Go With It, OK?

Any Lord of the Rings fans know that Shelob is a giant, scary spider who nearly turns Frodo into a Hobbit snack. But in Monolith's upcoming sequel Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, she's also a sexy lady who sort of helps the hero? The Internet isn't sure how to feel about this, but Monolith's creative vice president, Michael de Plater, told Eurogamer in a recent interview the lore supports it. Since Tolkien describes Shelob's mother, Ungoliant, as an evil shape-shifting spirit, game developers reason Shelob can change forms, too. The interview is a fascinating rabbit hole of Rings arcana and theory, making a case for Shelob and Gollum as the story's "unsung heroes." Check it out.
