Why Square Enix is Resurrecting 'Fear Effect' After 17 Years
GamesIndustry.biz has a fascinating interview with indie studio Sushee and publisher Square Enix about the revival of Fear Effect. For those who don't know, Fear Effect was a popular action adventure game released on the original PlayStation in 2000. It got a prequel the following year, but the franchise ended after that. Now, 17 years later, it's getting a remake called Fear Effect Reinvented. It launches on PC and consoles in 2018. Sushee is also working on Fear Effect Sedna, a crowdfunded, isometric tactics game, for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
"Originally we wanted to see if opening up our back catalog of Western IP could help indie developers to make a name for themselves, considering how tough it can be to make a splash with original IP. So when Sushee pitched Fear Effect Sedna after finishing on Goetia [a point-and-click adventure also published by Collective], we were open to the experiment," Phil Elliott, director of indie development at Square Enix London, tells GamesIndustry.biz.
