Sony Reminisces About 'Gran Turismo'
With Gran Turismo Sport coming out next week, Sony is looking back at the franchise's 20-year history. Over on the PlayStation blog, Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi and Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida talk about the origins of the first Gran Turismo in 1993. Yoshida had just joined the PlayStation development team and was working on the console's software lineup. He turned to Yamauchi for help. Yamauchi wanted to make a realistic driving simulator. The executives didn't bite, but the team began working on Gran Turismo in the background anyway. Once Yamauchi gained his bosses' trust, he pitched Gran Turismo again.
