VR enthusiasts will soon be able to enter one of the most iconic science fiction universes in cinematic history, as Oculus announced three games based on the Blade Runner property, just in time for the October 6 release of Blade Runner 2049.
The first will be available tomorrow, July 21, on the Gear VR platform. Blade Runner 2049: Replicant Pursuit was developed by Turtle Rock Studios, who are best known for popular shooters like Left 4 Dead and Evolve.
The game places you in the cockpit of a spinner, the flying police cars seen in the original film, in pursuit of a rogue replicant. Check out the trailer below.
The other two games will be available for both Gear VR and Oculus Rift, but details are sparse. Oculus has said they’ll launch closer to the film’s premiere date and will give fans “a taste of this beloved neo-noir universe in a uniquely visceral way.”
Speaking of “uniquely visceral,” Comic-Con attendees will get to check out another Blade Runner experience, which Oculus calls a blend of VR and physical space. It even includes a replica of the White Dragon Noodle Bar, so you can slurp down noodles just like Rick Deckard. The installation is open to the public until July 23.
Even though these games are more likely to be “experiences” than AAA titles, it’ll still be fun to step into this amazing universe. Believe it or not, before tomorrow, there will only have been two video games based on Blade Runner since the film’s release in 1982.
