'Yakuza 0'

Just as Grand Theft Auto found one of its most evocative settings by going back to 1980s Miami in Vice City, the prequel to the Yakuza series headed back to 1980s Tokyo and Osaka. The fictional Kamurocho and Sotenbori districts of Yakuza 0 play host to a serious crime drama and brutal brawling as expected, but also a wealth of silly sidequests and minigames that evoke a time when Japan seemed to be racing into the future. There are disco clubs to dance in, arcades full of classic Sega games, phone clubs for meeting singles, a cabaret club to manage, and an entire subgame built on real estate investment in this economic boom time. The Yakuza games can seem impenetrable from the outside, but going back to a formative moment in its characters' lives and also a formative time for modern Japan make Yakuza 0 a perfect entry point.
