Hidden Folks

Pixelhunting for vital items was infuriating in classic adventure games but nevertheless spawned the genre of hidden object games. Hidden Folks was even more focused, throwing away all the locked doors and story cruft to keep only the hunting for little things (people, animals, tools, and other oddities) tucked away in its busy scenes. Making the treasure hunt the entire game rather than progress-blocking busy work freed it up to be as fun as a well-made jigsaw, and the hand-drawn art and mouth-made sounds were too friendly and welcoming to get mad at (the “noop-noop” noise of car horns followed me out of Hidden Folks and made real-life traffic jams seem jolly). Those sounds sometimes provided clues as well, a monkey ook-ooking or a trapped person calling for help as you moused over a gorgeous children's book landscape.
