Watch Tony Hawk Skate the World’s First Horizontal Loop

The skateboarding great puts it all on the line as he challenges the ‘Sony Spiral’ – because why not?

That whole thing about age just being a number? Ask Tony Hawk about it.

Despite skating professionally since the early Eighties – and “retiring” from competition in 1999 – Hawk is still traveling the world on wheels, and pushing boundaries everywhere he goes. Being the first skateboarder to pull off a 900 (and still being athletic enough to do it 12 years later)? That’s old news. So, with the help of Sony, Hawk built the world’s first horizontal loop – at least, it’s the first one he’s ever seen – and set out to defy the laws of gravity yet again.

“People keep asking me questions, like, ‘How do you approach it?'” Hawk said. “I don’t know. I’m just going to find out the hard way.”

And he did. Over and over again. As expected, there were some gnarly falls along the way, which probably made him question why the hell he thought skating a giant toilet bowl (or “Sony Spiral,” as his corporate benefactors would like you to call it) was a wise idea. But Hawk eventually pulled it off – and made it look rather easy in the process – proving once again that we should never question the intentions of the G.O.A.T.

According to his Instagram, this moment has been years in the making , so props for finally pulling it off. Now go get an ice bath and enjoy retirement, or something (look how well it’s working out for Floyd Mayweather). Of course, knowing Hawk, it won’t be long before he’s back on the board, thinking up new ways to test the limits of gravity – and sanity.
