Last month, Roberta Vinci played spoiler in Serena Williams’ quest for history at the US Open. On Friday, Serena’s older sister Venus got some revenge, and Vinci wasn’t so happy about it.
In a semifinals matchup against Vinci in the Wuhan Open, Williams bounced back from a sluggish start to take a comfortable 4-1 lead in the third set. But the Italian fought back to even the score and force a tiebreak. And that’s when things got really interesting.
With emotions running high, and Venus doing her best to drag out the final points, Vinci’s frustrations boiled over – as you can see around 3:25 in the clip above. Angry at how long Venus was taking to get into position on match point, the microphones picked Vinci saying “What the fuck?” in Italian and sarcastically asking Venus if she wanted some tea or coffee while she waited for her serve (you can also hear Williams shoot back “Excuse me?”)
Apparently having enough of this shit, Venus then returned Vinci’s serve with a wicked backhand that the Italian hit wide, and Williams’ punctuated her win with a defiant fist pump and death stare. The two then met at the net in a handshake that was as icy as it was brief.
Following the match, Venus mentioned how she wished she could give the win to Serena after she fell short of becoming the first woman since 1988 to complete a calendar year Grand Slam.
“Definitely watching the match at the US Open, I learned a lot from Serena,” Williams said. “If I could, I’d give my win to Serena at the US Open – unfortunately it doesn’t work like that.”
It may not work that way, Venus, but revenge can be oh-so-sweet.
