Watch Hank Azaria Give the Mets a ‘Simpsons’ Voiceover

Apu, Moe and Chief Wiggum marvel at Endy Chavez’s catch and more memorable moments in Mets’ history

Every Simpsons fan on the planet already knows Hank Azaria is a talented guy, so much so that he could probably make watching paint dry entertaining. Or baseball. You know, same thing.

Azaria, the voice behind memorable characters like Moe Szyslak and Chief Wiggum, has been a Simpsons staple since the show’s inception nearly 30 years ago, and is still going strong. That’s due in no small part to his talents, but also probably his Mets fandom – because if there’s one thing supporting the Amazins teaches you, it’s endurance.

Azaria stopped by the MLB Network’s MLB Central on Monday, and was asked to put his own twist on the some of the franchise’s more memorable moments – with the help of his wide-ranging impersonations. He obliged, of course, and knocked the ball out of the park by doing things like re-calling Mookie Wilson’s 1986 World Series grounder as Moe.

“Here comes Mookie…ah, game’s over, down the – oh, it gets through Buckner’s legs! And the game is not over, and the Mets win! But somehow they’re gonna blow it anyway. Even though they actually won, they’ll find a time machine, go back in time and erase that World Series victory.”

Azaria went on to call Endy Chavez’s unforgettable catch in Game 7 of the 2006 National League Championship Series as Apu (a fellow fan of the “NY” Mets squadron) and the memorable dustup between Roger Clemens and Mike Piazza as Chief Wiggum. By the end, it became pretty clear that baseball is a lot more entertaining when Simpsons characters are in the booth calling the action.

This isn’t the first time Azaria has given MLB a Simpsons makeover. Back in 2013, he dug into his bag of tricks to announce the Dodgers’ starting lineup from top to bottom. Still, hearing him bring the show to life will never, ever get old.
