Serena Williams Didn’t Finish Her Own 5K – Cue the Outrage

There are plenty of folks out there who believe American Pharoah – a horse, mind you – should’ve been named Sports Illustrated‘s Sportsperson of the Year, and while we can debate the merits of the Triple Crown-winner’s year versus, say, Stephen Curry’s, in the end, the honor went to tennis star Serena Williams.
And while Serena certainly deserved it, all the Pharoah Phanatics out there will no doubt gloat over this bit of news: On Sunday, Williams held her second annual “Live Ultimate Run” in Miami Beach, Florida, a 5K that benefits the Serena Williams Fund, which helps people affected by senseless violence and ensures that everyone has equal access to education. It’s great cause that has made a difference in a number of area across Africa. But, for whatever reason, Williams didn’t finish her own race.
Instead of making her way around the course like everyone else (including her sister, Venus Williams) she gave her legs a break by hopping in a cab and coasting to the finish line. Someone even snapped pictures of her doing it, because it’s 2015.
Damn injury: @serenawilliams has been spotted catching a taxi to the finish line of her own charity run. pic.twitter.com/uBAE8aIAVX

In Williams’ defense, she didn’t try and pull a fast one on us – once she got to the finish line, she posted a video on Facebook and admitted that she wasn’t feeling it this year. She also did her duty by cheering on the rest of the runners while kicking it in the DJ booth, so cut her some slack.
“I didn’t run the whole way this year,” Williams said. “But next year I will!”
Don’t let all that fool you, though. Serena can definitely run – just ask the dude who tried to steal her cell phone.
