See Metallica’s Perfect ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ From Stanley Cup Finals

James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett delivered national anthem before their San Jose Sharks faced Pittsburgh Penguins in Game Four

A night after Carlos Santana delivered “The Star-Spangled Banner” before Game Two of the NBA Finals in Oakland, two more Bay Area music legends, Metallica‘s James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett, were recruited to perform the national anthem before Game Four of the Stanley Cup Finals between the San Jose Sharks and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Metallica’s two-axe attack found Hammett delivering the anthem’s main melody while Hetfield ran counterpoint, adding reinforcement and rumble at all the right moments. Hetfield capped off their killer rendition with an exultant fist pump.

For the performance, both Metallica members wore Sharks jerseys, their on-ice amplifiers sported a unique Sharks/Metallica logo and even Hetfield’s Flying V included a Sharks sticker. Both guitars used in the performance will be sold through NHL Auctions to raise money for the Sharks Foundation.

Earlier in the day, all of Metallica hung out in the locker room with Sharks players like Brent Burns – the super-bearded hockey player enjoying the national anthem at the 1:44 mark – and Logan Couture. This isn’t the first time Metallica has brought their guitars to a Bay Area sporting event as the heavy metal legends are the recipient of an annual Metallica Day at San Francisco Giants games.
