Prior to his March Madness concert, which also featured cuts off his acclaimed to Pimp a Butterfly and good kid, m.A.A.d. city, Lamar dropped by NRG Stadium to talk college basketball with Charles Barkley and the rest of the TBS commentating crew. Lamar said of his own basketball proficiency, “I’m decent” and ranked himself an 8.5 out of 10 skills-wise. After dismissing Barkley’s singing skills, the rapper was asked about the determination required to make a hit album or win the March Madness tourney.

“When you’re in the studio and in that vibe, no distractions, you have to completely zero in,” Lamar said. “Phones off. Bad energy in the studio, kick them out. You have to be 100 percent dedicated, period. And that’s what it takes to win in general. That’s what my beliefs are.
